SWIMMING

Scattering like little kids
Warily braving cold waters
In unusual gay abandon
Mocking at each other
Moving alert, in glee
In fringes of beach
Needing refreshed spirit that
Great morning sun offered

Note: The photos were taken during our Seminar in a beach resort. We had team building activities in the wee hours of the morning and one of the games was "fill the bucket", using anything we had on our body, so naturally, the guys removed shirts, while others who had towels in hand, like me, used them to get water from the sea and filled our respective buckets. We had four teams and our team won anyway....:) We had real fun, like kids... :) The pictures say all....:)

"If Only....."

Freedom from the pain she wanted from every prick of the needle. After every painful jab, she would soon feel peace descending on her and the pain in the body vanished. As she fell into deep slumber, she sensed little by little her mind transported to a beautiful place of luscious green, a colorful space with azure sky dotted with fluffy white clouds, she felt as carefree and happy as she could be in her dream world.
Running barefoot, with colorful balloons on her hands, continuously teasing and daring her best friend Jim…."C'mon, beat me in this race if you can", Leah laughing in high spirits dared him. "And once you catch me, all these balloons are for you to release in the sky in sheer joy", she added. "Ha ha ha, slow-foot turtle, bleh!!!” she taunted him taking her to cloud nine.
Enthusiastic Jim was happy to give her a lead keeping deliberately a safe distance. Little did she know that Jim wanted her to run slow lest she tired herself? He would put a zestful demeanor giving her a false sense of a contest.
Ever since Leah was diagnosed with a terminal disease, Jim loved her more than ever.
Don't you like to have these balloons Jim?" Leah mocked. Oh yes, of course, dear. I would love to beat you,  though you seem fleet footed, I am not giving up,” Jim shouted back. "Maybe you're a weakling Jim. Run!!! I am far ahead! You're giving up?" Leah dared again. "No, no, once I catch you up, I will imprison you in my arms and let loose those balloons", Jim cheerfully shouted back.
Overly exhausted when her running turned to an irregular trot, she stumbled on the ground; Jim rushed to her side, lifted and rested her head on his lap. “Leah.....open your eyes.....!!! We should rush to hospital,” he pleaded. When she didn't react, he was filled with fear of the worst and shouted “Leah, wake up!!!. My love, tell me what is wrong?” Crying loud, Jim took the thread clasped in her hands and let go the balloons in the air. “Let the colorful balloons follow you”, he sobbed, as the balloons wafted their way up in the vast sky.
Moments later when the doctor came to check Leah, he found she had breathed her last in her sleep. She won her eternal freedom from pain.

T'was written in the stars......

My fate is written in the stars. Like a rainbow, it comes in different hues. We did not plan what we might become but it is God's omniscient knowledge that did plan it all. At times we may question Him, but who are we to question His omnipotence?

Your fate is not my fate. You may be lucky while I am unfortunate. Or it may be the other way around. Whatever it is, we cannot question God.

Some say it is us who make our future. Others say it is etched in our palms. Still others believe that it has something to do with our astrological or birth signs. What one believes is what one is guided with.

Undoubtedly, everyone wants a Utopian life, a bed of roses. But even a rose has thorns. The thorns are the spices in life. For every accidental prick, it may make us better or make us worse

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. These are the colors that make the rainbow beautiful. These also represent the colors in our life. Our basic instinct is to want a happy life, in bright yellow. We desire sunshine and total bliss, free from worries and wants.

Violet remains a sad color, we often wish not to have it. But through the years, the meaning of this color has metamorphosed. This color now represents women empowerment. But I am happy at the wonderful transformation of the new world that was male-dominated for a long time. Women are now equal to men in the workplace and in every sphere.

If I could only choose the right star that would reflect the color of the fate I want, I want a green and blue life. I want it green for green is life. It signifies growth, renewal, health and environment. For every violet interlude in my life, I want green to overcome it.

Vanity and all profaneness threaten my existence. I never wished a life of unhappiness and failures. For every moment that I am down, I want some blue in my life. I love its calming effect and soft attributes. It gives me peace of mind after a trying moment that tested my patience and kindness.

After all, we only crave for the good things in life. But there's no perfect life. And there's no perfect color in life. Combine some colors and what comes out is a beautiful rainbow. For life to be perfect, happy and well-lived, it must be rainbow-colored.

Like all others, I wish a beautiful rainbow in my life. And what’s in a rainbow? It makes us a hopeless romantic, a lover, a dreamer. Because we believe that our wish may come true when we see a rainbow in the sky. There’s also a promise that at the end of the rainbow is a pot of gold. And my life's a rainbow, in beautiful, colorful hues. God is the wonderful artist and for every stroke of His brush is a unique creation.

MY FAMILY - Acrostic Short Story

Melissa seemed to be drowning on her own thoughts. Sleepless for so many weeks now, court battles and all have taken a toll on her health. But her daughter is too precious to her she can’t let her go to an irresponsible father.

Years passed and now Lizzie is in the third grade since Joshua left them for an unknown reason. He just vanished like a thin smoke on air. No letters, no phone calls, nothing, whatsoever. He made no effort to contact her.

Finally, and one day, he suddenly showed up. “You what?’ Melissa laughed incredulously. “We’re not communicating, are we? You see, I took all the burdens of being a father and mother to Lizzie. Just Me!”

All the time instincts told her she should not lose this battle. She can’t live a day without Lizzie on her sight. She is too precious to her and she was the reason why she became stronger to face life and all the consequences of giving birth to her little girl.

Musing silently, she was startled when Joshua suddenly divorced her from her thoughts. “Though not legally dear, I am still her father, but if you can’t bear that she be taken away from you, then you know what I mean”, as Joshua stared down his straight imperious nose at her. “I trust you’re going to be reasonable about this and not turn into another…..” “Reasonable?” Melissa bantered back.

“Is your loving care so precious and unique that it justifies your intent of taking custody of her? Are you that arrogant? That egotistical? Tell me?”

Lizzie was the fruit of a whirlwind romance. Melissa thought that if she would give in to Joshua’s interest of intimacy, she can finally have him and beat all other ladies who wished him to be their Prince Charming. But her dream of a grand wedding did not happen. She got pregnant, took the brunt of it. She even wished to end her life then but through the loving support of her parents, she was able to hurdle it all.

Yes, having Lizzie at a young age, she didn’t enjoy her youth so much. And now, here is her irresponsible father. “All right, enough!” Melissa muttered. “But, we’re not legally married yet”, she continued. “Oh, that’s not a problem anymore, we can take care of that tomorrow, or next week or next month, but eventually, we’re going to solve the problem. We will. Together we can handle anything.” Joshua pulled her against him. She smiled, snuggling in the warmth of his neck. “I’m so happy, Joshua. Sometimes I get scared it can’t last.” His hand curved over the back of her head. “It’ll last, I swear to you, it will. This is the only beginning, my love.” His mouth closed over hers, sealing the vow.

My Country-Acrostic Short Story

My recent holiday to one of the cleanest and one of the most beautiful places in the world could only give me much praise and envy for my own country.

You go to malls, take the cab, train or bus without hassles or fear of being robbed or taken advantage of by other people who would want to cut long queues.

Close to my dream of a Utopian world except for the uncaring, unfriendly and inhospitable people maybe because all they need to do every day of their lives is to catch up the train or bus in order not to be late for work. Rat race. People walk in fast strides. No dilly-dallying. No time to be a friendly neighbor.

Of what amazes me much is the highly disciplined people. Nobody is allowed to litter, vandal, scatter cigarette butts, no chewing gums, always flush the toilet after use, to name a few and lest one does any of these, one will be fined without further questions a whopping $SG1000 which is more or less Php32,000 in my country. And an ordinary employee here in my country would be earning that in one year?

Under close scrutiny, you can’t see flies, cockroaches, rodents and mosquitoes hovering on air and running around supermarkets, wet markets, fast foods, restos and even in residential homes such as flats and condos. No air pollution.

No traffic. No beating of red lights. No stealing of queues. No pickpockets, hold uppers, gangsters or paupers on streets, you hardly see violators and law enforcers in any corner. The government trusts its citizens so no need to post law enforcers in any corners. Cameras do the job. Everyone is safe twenty four hours a day. Jog in the middle of the night alone and no harm will come your way.

To me, I only feel envy. “I wish to live and work here”, I often whisper to myself while touring the city. Come to my country especially in the cities and you could see a stark contrast. Garbage here, paupers there, squatters here, snatchers there. When walking on a busy street, you have to clutch your bag so tight towards your body to protect your money and all personal belongings.

Relying on too much trust, my daughter lost a digicam and a high end phone to snatchers in broad daylight on a busy section of Baguio City. Little did she know that the once popular and most respected Summer Capital of the Philippines has become a haven for vagabonds and snatchers because so many tourists come here the whole year round and are good prey for earning instant money by selling their loots.

Yes, my beloved country has deteriorated. The government is just as helpless. Honorable political leaders spend more time bickering and bantering on non-sense matters in their sacred session halls. I could only boasts of its beautiful tourist attractions, the gift of Mother Nature. Other than that, there’s not much to brag about.

The Voices

Visually she was not mistaken. She saw it with her big brown eyes. Her eyes cannot lie. There were Gabrielle and Lucifer beside her. Lucifer looked so deceiving in his smiles while Gabrielle smiled innocently at her.

Obediently she listened to both of them. "Miriam, you're beautiful, attractive, intelligent and of course look tantalizing in my eyes", Lucifer whispered. "But for quite sometime now you're sad. You looked like you've lost some precious toys and fumbling on every nook and cranny in your room, but can't find them. Why don't you go out and have some fun? Snatch the first guy you would meet as you step out on the pavement. Go disco dancing and drinking until the wee hours," he said, and added with a grin, "Then do some naughty things with your guy".

In Gabrielle's wish to comfort Miriam and to negate those devilish insinuations of Lucifer, she whispered into her ears "Oh, don't listen to that moron dear, he'll only ruin your life. Remember, life is not a bed of roses. At some points in your life, you become weak, fragile, vulnerable to your feelings. It's just that we need to be strong to overcome these feelings because I know that God will not give us trials that we cannot hurdle or surpass victoriously. When God closes a door, He opens a window, right?

Confused and bewildered, Miriam doesn't know to whom she'll listen. Lucifer's prodding was so tempting and Gabrielle's counsel was so good. She felt  safer continuing to brood on her disappointments.

Entangled with such thoughts, she suddenly heard Lucifer hurling invectives against Gabrielle. "Who the hell are you? I just wanna make Miriam happy and you could only say and utter Godly words to her. Your pieces of advice will never make her happy. Veer off from her, now!!!!" Lucifer shouted at Gabrielle.

Silently Gabrielle cried but hid it from Miriam.  She was not there for her own comfort but to encourage and uplift Miriam's spirits.  As Gabrielle turned back to Miriam she realized Miriam poised a two-bladed knife above her chest.  "Miriaaaaaaaaaaaam!  Nooooooooooo!" screamed Gabrielle.  Miriam was panting, gasping for air.  Her lungs frozen.  Her stomach churned with terror.  Desperation soaked her clothes in sweat. She groped for the knife.  "Where is the knife,” she whispered.  She stole another tight breathe. “Where is that knife?”  Knock, knock, came sounds from her door.  "Mom, you're late now, aren't you going to office?” her lil' lovely Princess asked.  "Oh no . . . yeah, I will, thanks Sweetheart," she sighed.

SEA BREEZE

Softly it swirls
Each blow and twirls
And gives a thrill!

Bleaching heat of the sun
Reassures to quench one
Everybody joins the fun
Easy on everyone
Zooming air up and and down
Enjoyed by my loved ones.

WHITE TURNED-BLUE CHRISTMAS

Christmas carols are played everywhere. Beulah felt so excited. Tomorrow she would be flying to the United States to meet her fiancé’. This is unexpected. It was a long distance love affair but thanks to the presence of internet, their love blossomed through constant communications.

How Armand felt that day? He’s on Cloud 9. At last, he found the true love of his life, his soul mate in the person of Beulah. She’s a sweet young lady, very caring and with a simple beauty. Intelligent and with humor, too!

Reckoning the time, in a couple of hours, they will be seeing each other personally. Both wondered how they would react, how they would accept the presence of each other.

In their prayers, both hoped that there would be no hindrance anymore to their love affair. Beulah can’t live without Armand and so Armand does. Since the time they’ve met, their day won’t be complete without placing a call to each other and would be sleepless if they can’t talk and bid goodnight first to each other.

Sounds corny you may say. Tick, tack, tick! Armand hurriedly went to the garage, ignited the engine of his car. He can’t afford to be late and let Beulah be waiting there for him for a long time.

The plane touched down at exactly 10 pm. That would be exactly two hours before Christmas Eve. This would be the best Christmas both will have in their entire life. In the almost endless conversations over the phone, they talked about spending their first Christmas together to be in each other’s arms. After a sumptuous meal over a candle lit dinner, they would be holding hands watching fire crackers invade the air. They would be kissing each other once the clock strikes twelve and Armand will be bringing out the engagement ring he bought the past week.

Marriage proposals have been expressed and Beulah was more than willing to tie the knot with Armand. For her, he is the man of his dreams, the man who could complete him.

Along the highway, snowflakes begin to fall.  Armand could only drive carefully; afraid any mishap might come his way. Beulah checked out of the immigration. Her heart started pounding so wildly. She tried to compose herself. Armand arrived in time, and started scouring for that lovely face of Beulah among the crowd of arriving passengers. Both easily recognized each other and they both felt feverish and blushing at the sight of each other. Feeling missive and homesick, they both ran to meet each other in a tight embrace, oblivious of the people around them.

Speechless at first but their eyes seem to speak a thousand longings. Armand took Beulah’s hand and boarded the car. Outside the airport, snow has thickened, and it seemed impossible for them to travel but they proceeded. A couple of kilometers away from Armand’s house, snow continued to envelop the surroundings including the car. Then a halt. It can no longer move an inch. They were trapped inside the car. Spent Christmas Eve together inside the car and till eternity.
